Braintanned Products

About Pricing;

Since raw skins do not come as factory cut dimesions, the sizes are approximate. We will do the best to provide you with the size hide you are looking for. Generally our Deer skins run an average of 12 Square feet (large Montana deer) sometimes less, and on occasion (as pictured below) get quite large. We usually have enough hides tanned in stock ready to smoke, and some already smoked to fill immediate orders, but if ever you're in doubt, or it is a concern, please call us. We enjoy hearing from you.

Robes are done by the order. There is a waiting period on these, as orders fill up quickly, with one tanner to fill the demand. Again, call ahead to place an order if you like, and see the availibilty, and time frame for completion (as a hide can take 2-4 weeks to tan).

Call us as often as you like, NEVER feel that you are bugging us! After all it is Your money, and your order, you should know what is going on with it and have every right! if you are ever in the North Eastern region of Montana, give us a call and we could be able to arrange a visit, maybe even let you watch the process as it is being done(always a joy)!

What's Braintan?

Braintan buckskin is a natural method of tanning deerskins and preserving them throught the use of natural oils and wood smoke. Each hide that is made represents numerous hours of intensive labor and hard work. With a little bit of care your buckskin can last you a lifetime of use and wear. Buckskin is not only breathable, but light weight and durable, and when smoked, it will deter insects and rodents from making your hide into their next meal.

To Smoke or Not To Smoke

While buckskin is functional just as is, and many people do make garments out of it. However, two problems exist with unsmoked bucksin. The ever present worry of varmits and insects is abound, and if the hide ever gets wet, it hardens when dried. Whereas the smoked buckskin, as mentioned before, repels these uninvited creatures and not only when it gets wet and dries, can it quickly be stretched back to it's original loft, but is also machine washable.
