Hickory is an awsome and curious wood. it's unique intrlocking grain structure allows you to violate so many bowyery rules (within reason). Backing one wood with another wood is no new concept to the realm of bow making and hickory is at the top of the list for backing (and one of my personal favorites). It is easy to work finishes nice and takes alot of abuse.
Backing strips are edge-ring biased (quarter-sawn) for maximum strength. They're just a little bit more than an eighth inch thick. Cut very smooth. |
